FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Prior Lake, Minnesota
Rick Olson announced his candidacy for the Minnesota State Senate pledging to “work on what matters to you!”
A former Michigan State Representative, Rick Olson is seeking the DFL nomination and hopes to challenge Republican State Senator Eric Pratt in the November 2026 General Election.
Minnesota Senate District 54 lies entirely within Scott County, including the cities of Shakopee, Prior Lake and Jordan and surrounding townships.
Olson, a resident of Prior Lake and married to Linda for over 54 years, is originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
He grew up in poverty after his father died when he was two months old, leaving his mother with six kids to raise on welfare. He followed his mother’s mantra to “work hard and get an education,” ending up graduating from Stanford Law School and completing the coursework in two Ph.D. programs.
Growing up in agriculture, his goal was to become an agricultural cooperative President, which ultimately, he became in Renville, MN in 1994. He has also worked as a private attorney, attorney for the House of Representatives in Washington State, a certified financial planner, agricultural lender, chief financial officer for a swine genetics company and has over 10 years as a K-12 school district business manager.
He applied this immense knowledge and experience as a State Representative in Michigan in 2011-12, before coming back to Minnesota in 2014.
Olson’s agenda includes working tirelessly to push back against Trump’s power grabs endangering our Constitutional Republic and for what matters to working families, such as protecting the pocketbooks of everyday Minnesotans. “Growing up in poverty taught me the value of money and making it stretch a long way”, he says, “and that also applies to taxpayers’ money.”
“We need to do what we can at the state level to protect our high standard of living here in Minnesota, to protect the middle income residents, and to protect our Constitutional rights. The time is now for us to all stand up and speak up for what we know is right!” Olson said.
